Introducing Opptunity

Research knowledge,
under version control.

Opptunity turns a field’s working knowledge into living books — peer-reviewed, versioned, and attributed to everyone who contributes.

Why Opptunity exists

Source of truth

Where does a field keep its source of truth?

In one living book — peer-reviewed and current.

01 / 05

01 — Inside a living book

Read. Review. Revise.

Every passage is canonical, open to discussion, and revisable — one sentence followed from inline comment to peer-reviewed revision.

02 — How a change happens

From a single suggestion to the canonical record — in three reviewed steps.

01

Propose

Any member suggests an edit at the sentence level — with the reasoning attached. The book branches; nothing canonical changes yet.

02

Review

Domain experts discuss the proposal in context, request changes, and sign off. The thread stays attached to the revision for good.

03

Merge

Once approved, the revision becomes canonical and the version bumps. The previous text is never lost — only superseded.

03 — The model

Four principles.
One living record.

Living documents

Living books, not static files.

A book is the current consensus of a field. Propose a change, have it peer-reviewed, and the accepted revision becomes canonical — with the complete history retained.

Topics

One field, connected.

Books, proposals, and contributors share a topic’s concepts — so related work links across authors and years instead of fragmenting into silos.

Shared topic concepts

Discussion

Debated in the open.

Inline threads anchor to the exact sentence under question, and a field-wide forum carries the broader debates — each discussion attached to the text it concerns.

Inline threads & forum

Atomic precision

Fix the formula, not the chapter.

Edits happen at the sentence level. That granularity keeps reviews fast, conflicts rare, and the canonical text continuously current.

Line-level diffs

04 — Provenance

Every sentence
remembers its author.

Knowledge on Opptunity is never anonymous and never frozen. Each line carries the revision that introduced it and the people who shaped it — an unbroken chain from first draft to current consensus.

No scores. No leaderboards. Just an honest, traceable record of who contributed what.

05 — What it replaces

One living record, instead of knowledge scattered everywhere.

Today

Lab knowledge spread across PDFs, slides, and drives
Answers buried in chat threads and inboxes
Reviews that vanish once a paper ships
No record of who knew what, or when

With Opptunity

One living book per topic, always current
Discussion anchored to the exact claim
Every review preserved in the record
Every contribution signed and attributed

06 — Governance & privacy

Your knowledge, on your terms.

A book is owned by the people who maintain it. They decide who can read it, who can propose, and who can merge — and can take the whole record with them at any time.

Roles

Owner, Editor, and Member — each with defined rights to propose, review, and merge.

Visibility

Read and history visibility set per book — from fully public to private to the group.

Participation

Policies decide who may open proposals and join the review of each book.

Portability

The full revision history is exportable — your record is never locked in.

A field’s working knowledge in one place — kept current by review, and credited to the people who built it.

Why we’re building Opptunity

07 — Get started

A field’s knowledge should stay current: written once,

kept honest by review, and credited to everyone who shapes it.

Built for research groups, labs, course staff, and scholarly societies. Opptunity is rolling out to pilot teams.
